FOR STUDENTS

Planning your ISTA experience has never been this easy! Follow these steps and you are sure to have a terrifically tropical experience on the island.

I am a part of the island,

no matter how far away I get from it.

Ryan Varma, Grade 7

WHAT TO EXPECT

During the festival

This is a workshop model festival. What that means is that you'll spend the majority of your time with one artist working on an area of speciality while unpacking the starting point "This island is mine".

As well you will get the opportunity to choose two 90-minute taster workshops that are provided by some of our talented teachers from the various visiting schools.

When you are not in your workshops or full group, you will have free time to enjoy the soccer pitch, the beautiful beach and even swim in the sea. Some of you will be tired and you'll even have the opportunity to have a shower or take a nap before dinner each day. During free time the snack and souvenir bar will be open. You can get an idea of prices on the Packing List below. However, do not fear, the food at Telunas is excellent! They will cater to dietary issues and there are lots of choices.

Before the event

  • Along with your teacher, you will be choosing one core workshop and two taster workshops for the event. ISTA does its very best to ensure at least one of your top choices for each of these areas.

  • You will also be asked to choose one room buddy who will be in the same dorm as you.

  • Review the ISTA code of conduct with your teacher.

  • If you require any prescription medication, you will need to have your parents fill in the authorization to administer medication form that your teacher will share with you and your parents. Put the form in a Ziploc back along with the medication which MUST be in its original packaging in order to be used during the event.

  • Pack all required items as outlined in the packing list provided.

Morning of departures from Singapore

  • Singapore schools will plan a meeting spot and meeting time at the ferry terminal.

  • Overseas visiting schools will be met by the ISTA Rep in the lobby of the Bay Hotel at 8:15 am.

  • Everyone will need a day bag with a full water bottle (labelled with your name), hat and sunscreen. We recommend that you bring snacks for the long boat ride. Visiting schools can purchase snacks at the ferry terminal. Lunch will be provided on arrival.

  • Your packed bag will be your responsibility throughout the journey so be aware of where you leave it. On the ferry, your luggage will be organised by school groups. On the long boat, you will not have access to your packed bag so please ensure that whatever you want to have access to for the journey from Singapore to the Telunas Island Beach Resort is included in your day bag.

At the Singapore ferry terminal (departures)

  • Enter the terminal with your teacher.

  • Carry your own bag into the terminal.

  • Your teacher will give you your passport and ferry tickets. Keep these items safely in a pocket until your teacher collects them again.

  • Stay with your school group until everyone clears customs.

  • Please inform your teacher if you need to use the restroom and never go alone.

  • Wait responsibly and respectfully until we are called to board the ferry. Always remember that you are representing your school at all times and there are others travelling on the ferry who are not a part of the festival.

On the ferry

  • Seating is not assigned.  Find a seat responsibly.

  • You need to remain in your seat throughout the ride.

  • You can eat your bagged lunch or snack during the ferry ride and dispose of garbage in one of the garbage containers. Please do not leave a mess behind.

Clearing Indonesian customs and making our way to the long boats

  • Indonesian customs require total silence when passing through (think fire alarm drill). The customs officers are quite strict with this requirement.

  • Follow your teacher through customs.

  • You will give the customs agent your passport and then you will proceed through to the other side.

  • Telunas staff will then take responsibility for your passport until departure.

  • On the other side of customs, please follow your teacher to the meeting place in the terminal.

  • Once everyone is through customs we will organise students by their core workshops for the long boat journey.

Long boat trip to Telunas Island

  • Board the long boats with your core workshop group.

  • Load your own luggage onto the designated boats. You need to ensure that you can carry your luggage yourself from the ferry terminal to the long boat pier. This is about a 10-15 minute walk outdoors on uneven ground.

  • Put on a life jacket and keep it on for the entire journey.

  • You are welcome to eat any remaining snack/lunch you have with you. There is no place to purchase food at the long boat pier.

  • An extra water bottle will be provided for the boat trip. Keep hydrated.

  • Stay seated throughout the trip.

  • Get to know your new core workshop group and ISTA artist who will be travelling with you. You may also wish to bring a book for the journey. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to get to the island.

Arrival at Telunas Island Beach Resort

  • Bring your day bag off the long boat. The Telunas staff will unload packed luggage. As soon as you arrive you can enter the canteen. Your bag will be piled up by school groups.

  • Sit by school group in the canteen for welcome and safety briefing.

  • Listen respectfully to the safety briefing and then settle into your room.

While at Telunas

  • Please respect the expectations as set out by the Telunas staff in the safety briefing.

  • Respect others space, privacy, and personal belongings.

  • Keep your room and bed area clean.

  • Keep the noise down.

  • Be on time for workshops and meals.

  • Keep yourself hydrated (drink water even if you aren’t thirsty).

  • Share bathroom facilities respectfully.

Leaving Telunas

  • You will be expected to pack and have your room inspected before breakfast.

  • You will be asked to strip your sheets and pile them in the centre of the room along with used towels.

  • Once you are packed, you can bring your bags outside, but please do not leave this area until a teacher has checked your room and dismissed you to breakfast with your belongings.

  • You will be asked to store your packed bag by school group to be loaded on the boats.

  • You can leave your day bag on your table after breakfast and pick it up to take with you for the journey.

Travelling back from Indonesia

  • Be sure you have both your packed bag and day bag.

  • Follow your teacher from the long boat to the Indonesian ferry terminal.

  • Clear customs with your teacher (they will have your passport) and follow the rules requesting silence in the Indonesian ferry terminal.

  • Give your teacher your passport while you wait quietly and responsibly for the ferry.

Arrivals in Singapore

  • After you get off the ferry in Singapore, wait patiently for your teacher to give you your passport.

  • Follow your teacher to the Singapore immigration control area.  One teacher will want to go through first and have the second chaperone follow up the rear.

  • Once through immigration proceed to the customs line.

  • After everyone has had their bags scanned you will be in the arrival hall. Wait with your teachers until everyone has passed through customs.

  • Follow your teacher/school outside the terminal to find your school's buses or your awaiting parents.

  • Have a safe trip home everyone!

PACKING LIST

What to pack your things in

  • You will need one backpack or duffel bag (wheelie suitcases are not appropriate as they do not stack easily on the long boat). You will need to carry your own bag - others will not be able to do this for you as their hands will be full too.

  • You will also need one day pack (a small backpack or sports bag that can fit your water bottle, sunscreen, hat and other necessities).

What you MUST bring

The items listed below are NOT optional.

You must include these in your backpack and teachers should double check that these items have been packed in advance.

In your day pack

  • A packed snack for the ferry/long boat ride to Telunas. Schools that are traveling from overseas can buy snacks at the ferry terminal.

  • Hat (with a brim that won’t get blown off on a boat). Please note: If you do not have a hat or lose it, you'll be asked to purchase one.

  • Sunscreen

  • Small notebook and at least 2 writing utensils (The artists want you to have this).

In your packed bag

Clothes should be loose and easy to move in and appropriate for hot weather. If you have to pull on clothes to keep them in place or to avoid exposing yourself, these are not good choices for a theatre festival. Please avoid inappropriate slogans on t-shirts, midriff shirts for ladies and keep shorts to an appropriate length or you may be asked to change.

  • School appropriate swimsuit (no bikinis)

  • 1 pair of running shoes/tennis shoes that can get dirty

  • 1 pair of water shoes for the beach and/or tower jumping (Please note: you will not be allowed to swim without shoes that can be strapped to your feet like Tevas/Crocs/Chacos.)
